Our phones are a necessity because it helps us communicate in a matter of seconds. Our mobile phone helps us to connect with anybody around the world in just a few seconds. Herbert Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian philosopher for communication theory, is known for the expression “global village”. Therefore, our phones transform us into a global community.
Mobiles phones help us to capture the little things in life. Smart phones give us the opportunity to catch all the perfect moments and once in a life time moments in our life. If one chooses to use a computer or a digital single lens camera- if not prepared – the moment would pass by the time the computer finally loads or the settings on the DSLR are fixed. Professional photographer, Michael Walker- Toye, suggested in his article that the very best camera is the one that is always on you and ready to take a photo. “I am not too proud to miss an opportunity just because I don’t have my main camera on me.” Walker went on to say that all the images in his current article were taken with a Nokia 808. New York Times bestselling author, Alexandra Adornetto said “Sometimes it's the little things that count most.” Would you pass up an opportunity of your baby’s first few steps all because you cannot find the right ISO on the camera? Or would you let your best friend or family member board that plane without taking a selfie?
The Mobile phones are prefect for storing and maintain information. It allows you to enter information that you were given especially if you were not close to a pen or a piece of paper, the phone would come in handy. Smart phones are so beneficial in the 21st century that it helps to do a number of things such as:
- Recordings (lectures, business meetings, interviews)
- Video (event, behind the scenes)
- Access bank information/ school information
- Send and receive emails immediately
- Assist in court cases
- Permits download of apps (educational or creative )
Information is at our finger tips unless the individual chooses to limit his or her self to simply text, receive and send out calls- all we need to do is to take advantage of the opportunities that comes with a 21st century mobile phone.
Some may argue that mobile phones are a nuisance, but it all depends on how you make use of it and the time you spend on it. Did you know that mobile phones assist gatherings? Yes! according to a research done by two research analysis, Lee Raine and Kathryn Zickuhr (2015) associated with the Pew Research Center's Internet Project found that “33% of Americans say that when people use their phones at social gatherings it occasionally contributes to the conversation and helps the atmosphere of the gathering. Only 5% say such phone use “frequently” helps and 29% say it “occasionally” helps.
Asking an individual if they have or owned a phone is like asking a 15 year old if they are on Facebook or WhatsApp!- imagine the tightened eye brows one may receive as a response - It is imperative to have a mobile phone. One’s objective must be to manage or monitor the phone so it does not become a nuisance. We must make it our responsibility to take charge of our life. Mobile phones are a necessity, it is life!
